A Lexicographical Perspective to Intentional and Incidental Learning: Approaching an Old Question from a New Angle

Second-language learning is a complex process that combines text reception (reading, listening) and production (writing, talking). Applied linguistics usually distinguishes between intentional incidental learning. The academic literature contains various definitions of these concepts, especially in connection with reading. paper explores L2 from lexicographical perspective redefines the two terms based on parameters like flow, focus, interruption. It then focuses digital dictionaries integrated into e-readers, apps, writing assistants, argues this integration, so far, has not been particularly successful due to number negative factors. As an alternative, provides examples how lexicographical data could be filtered presented pop-up windows serve both incidental former requires instantaneous, contextualized, discreet assistance absolute minimum data, whereas latter presupposes easy access relevant additional data.
